When We Were Kings by Auryn Hadley

5 "When I Grow Up I Want To Be A Gladiator" Stars

I feel with this novel, I was first drawn to the cover. It was a girl with her head bent down as if she was suffering or felt shame, and yet she was dressed as a warrior... someone with power and who knew how to kick *ss and take names. Yet even with my initial interest in this book I didn't let myself get too excited about what I would find inside. Let's be honest, Kindle Unlimited has a lot of great and amazing options and I've saved a lot of money using it because so many books are available on it. But there are also those books that you pick up and while they sound like just your jam, the book inevitably ends up a disappointment.

Well I can say with complete confidence that you will NOT regret starting this novel. While the cover initially drew me in and caught my attention, it was the words and sentences and paragraphs and characters and storyline which held my attention and made me obsessed with the world this book presents. Literally this book blew my mind this week (which has been super stressful because of tests and pledging and other b.s.) and was the perfect thing to get me out of this funk. I've read some really amazing stories this past month so I was in a painful book hangover before I started When We Were Kings, and now I can say that my hangover might be even more torturous waiting for the third book to be released!

 - side note: For those intersected, there IS a third book that will be released at some time in the future... Hadley posted about it on FB after reposting my rave over her book! -

And if you don't believe me when I say that I fell in LOVE with this book... well maybe the fact that I plan on reading and re-reading this series will prove to you readers out there who doubt my sincerity. Thanks to Goodreads' little addition of multiple "read" dates, I will be updating throughout this year with how many times I go back to this little nugget of gold. So there.

But in all seriousness guys... if you are into fantasy books with gladiators and just bad *ss characters then this is the book you need to go and set yourself up with! And then let me know just how much you loved it so I can fangirl with you over it. YOU NEED THIS BOOK!

You can find this lovely book at these outlets:

Tossed into the gladiator arena, everyone expected the delicate girl in the fancy pink dress to be the first to die. Leyli had other plans. Surviving was at the top of her list. Revenge was a close second.

Having grown up behind the sheltered walls of the Oberhame Palace, she knew what the crowd wanted. Norihame had built their culture from the scraps of their neighbors. Gladiators were just one part. Evidently, political coups were another, and she'd just become a pawn in the games of men. But why was she still alive? They'd killed her brother, the heir to the throne. Had they gotten to her father? Was the king dead?

In the cell beside her, the Lion of Lenlochlien was impressed. The first day, they all cried. Men, women, it didn't matter. But this one was different. Her tears didn't slow her down, they just made her stronger, and when he looked in her eyes, he saw it. Her desperation was feral. It meant she wouldn't hesitate to do what she had to. She might be cornered, but that bitch was the kind that would bite.

When he offered advice, she took it. When he told her how to be better, she tried. When she kept coming back after each round, he dared to hope that she'd survive. He had no idea that he was about to become her best weapon. Leyli didn't just want to live through the games, she wanted to protect her father's throne, but to do that, she had to become someone else. She couldn't be the Princess of Norihame. The Lion had to make her a Wolf.

Chained side by side, he'll show her how to be a killer. She'll give him a reason to keep fighting. Together, they'll learn that it takes a friend to survive.

**When We Were Kings is a complete novel without a cliffhanger ending.**

God hunter by Amy Sumida (The Godhunter #1)

5 "This Series Kills - Literally" Stars

This book... this series...

There are no words for how much I have enjoyed reading Amy Sumida's novels. She is literally a genius when it comes to characters, plots, and romance! This is the first book in the Godhunter series and definitely something that you should check out if you're into strong female roles and lots of adventure and laughs.

So the series starts with Vervain just starting her god hunting career and she kind of explains exactly how she came into this profession. It seems pretty harsh to hunt down the gods, but I think everyone would be a little salty if they almost get sacrificed to a Hawaiian volcano god like some virgin back in the 'ole days. I totally understand why'd she want to protect not only herself but other unsuspecting humans from getting sacrificed. The book then gets really interesting and also chaotic (in the best way of course) when she meets the "God Squad" - a group of mythical and magical beings dedicated to protecting human kind from the other guys who want human death to fuel their powers. This starts Vervain (she's named after a herb btw) on this crazy adventure of hunting, and killing, and basically just getting caught up in the god politics.

The thing that stuck out to me the most in this series is the humor. Yes, books filled with action are great and everybody likes a war scene of two, but without some good for the soul laughter, the warring can get to be a little much. The thing that makes this book a 5 stars to me is the fact that the violence is matched by the humor which is matched by the romance. This trinity balance (hehe pun intended - you'll get this giggle when you read further into the series) takes this book from a four star rating and elevates it above most books that I get through Kindle Unlimited.

But not only is this trinity balance (i'm cracking myself up over this guys) super crucial to the series, but so is the fact that Vervain is just a freakin' awesome character to follow. She's got puns for days and kicks butt wherever she goes, what more do you want to read about???? This character is definitely one of my favorites that I've read this year and probably one of my favorites in this type of genre.

Disclaimer
Okay just to warn those that are really into the book from what I've mentioned to far, I do want to put a little disclaimer into this review for those who are picky on their romance/series. This series is super long... like 20 books and still growing long... that's a crap load of reading! For me, this is awesome because I never want my series to end! For others, this might just be a little too long for their taste. Also,  another little side note, this series does end up categorized as Reverse Harem. Don't know what that is? No problem, check out this post here: My New Favorite Genre  to see why I'm currently obsessed with the genre and why you should be too! But if this isn't your style of romance - which is kind of insane because it's super amazing - this might not be the series for you... but I say try it anyways because it's that awesome!

Otherwise, this is a series that EVERYONE should read because it literally has everything you would ever want in a book/series! So go check it out immediately, get yourself a copy, giggle at my inside jokes within this review, and then comment on your favorite character!!!

blurb
I'm going to tell you a secret. The gods are real. All of them. And they want you dead. Yes, you. Don't take it personally, they want all of us dead. Well, maybe not all of us but a lot of us. Why? Because we loved them once.

We used to sacrifice to them. Food, animals, ourselves. Not so much anymore. We stopped believing in them, kicked them to the curb and forgot about them, but they haven't forgotten us. They need us, need the energy we gave them through sacrifice, energy they used to gain magic, power, and immortality. See, the gods aren't gods without us.

So they came up with a plan. War. If we went to war against each other, they could take the dead as sacrifice. So they manipulated us, infiltrated our governments and possessed the minds of our leaders. They played us against each other. It was a good plan and it worked well. Until I found out.

Oh that sounded tough, didn't it? Honestly, I'm nothing special. I don't have super powers or inhuman strength. What I do have is a little magic and enough knowledge to fight them, hunt them. I may even have allies, gods who claim they're on our side, but I'm not sure yet. It's hard to trust a god of thunder who looks so damn good in his leather pants.

Harry Potter Makeup Brushes!!!!!!!!

Okay guys... let me just tell you what I am currently obsessed with... that's right: HARRY POTTER MAKEUP BRUSHES!

These were recently created within the past year and my goodness did it become a craze because as soon as they were released they were sold out! They were featured on popular sites like Buzzfeed and you may or may not have seen a Facebook ad for them. They were originally marketed to come from Storybook Cosmetics which is run by a set of triplets based in Nebraska who fangirl over important things like Harry Potter. Unfortunately for most of the world, me included, their brushes went out of stock super fast! But they do promise more coming soon and already have pre-orders set up on their site.

p.s. I may be wrong about Storybook Cosmetics putting them on the market because there was no actual pictures of the brushes in December but they did have an "out of stock" message for the wand brushes... so who knows?

I would definitely recommend heading over to their site and checking out what they have to offer in terms of wand makeup brushes... they aren't exactly like the ones portrayed in the films but hit the mark pretty close.

Check out these awesome wands here: http://bit.ly/2jnOCPs

So I was obsessed with these wands and basically told my parents and anyone who cared that this was what I wanted for xmas right?! Well, unfortunately for me my parents did not take this request seriously enough and by the time they checked out the link I sent them... they were GONE!

But luckily, there is some hope left in the world because when I got back to school I found these beauties left in my mailbox as a early birthday present!!!

Now I didn't actually get the Storybook Cosmetics Harry Potter Wands, instead my mom found another seller on Amazon who was selling the same items but slightly different variations... which I kind of like more than the Storybook Cosmetics ones to be completely honest. With this set there are 5 makeup brushes modeled after wands from the movies. Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, Ron Weasely, Albus Dumbledore, and Lord Voldemort's wands are all in this set and the handles do look like the ones depicted in the Harry Potter series!!!

These makeup brushes are freakin' awesome and I am so in love with how they look and feel! The handles are a metal and are actually pretty heavy, and the design of wands is really intricate and matches the movies to perfection!

So here's the types of brushes that are in the set and who they correlate to:

1. Harry Potter - The Foundation Brush

2. Lord Voldemort - The Concealer Brush

3. Albus Dumbledore - The Stippling Brush

(to give your makeup that airbrush finish)

4. Hermione Granger - The Angled Brush

5. Ron Weasley - The Blending Brush

p.s. I got the type of brushes and what they are called after googling makeup brushes so please don't hate me if I'm wrong and I mis-labeled a brush! Just post a comment below and I will correct my mistakes ASAP.

So there you have it. The magical and ever-whimsical Harry Potter Makeup Brush Set.

Here's the link to where I got mine on amazon (if you don't feel like typing "harry potter makeup brushes"): http://amzn.to/2j2Y248

Check it out and let me know what you think! Is there something you would change? Another wand you would rather see in the collection? Are the character wands and brushes not matched up how you think they should? Comment below and share your ideas!!!

Trying to Live With the Dead by B.L. Brunnemer

5 "Wish I Could Live With the Dead" Stars

So I came across this book on a FB group and I have to say that I am SO glad that I did! The title definitely through me off at first because I was like "trying to live with the dead? WTF does that mean? Is this chick actually living with the dead?". My worst fear was that this was a book about a girl living that graveyard life and how she lived with all of the spirits of the dead... super creepy and not really me style.

But no, I was wrong. This book is actually about a girl who's lived a pretty tough life and has a little extra quirk that makes her life that much harder. Yah she can see dead people. And talk to them. And help them move on. Now I have read books about girls seeing dead people before... believe it or not but it's actually a common theme in the book world and many an author has put a spin on it to make it uniquely creepy so I was very interested to see what B.L. Brunnemer would do with this novel.

Let's say I was pleasantly surprised!

I absolutely adore this book! The characters are unique and interesting, there's enough drama to keep me entertained but it's not off-putting, and I really like where the story is heading and where it might go in the next book. So let's break this down a little so you the reader can understand why this book should be your next read.

First, the characters. The main character is Alexis Delaney, and she kicks some major butt. I've mentioned this so many times in my favorite reads: but I like a main character that can kick butt and take names. Alexis is definitely the character who exemplifies what it means to be an awesome and strong female lead. She is in high school and has to deal with all those boys jumped up on hormones and catty girls jumped up on boys... and basically the high school characters are a mess and Alexis has to constantly deal with the petty bulls*t while also figuring out the whole "living with the dead" aspect of her life. But man does she get things done! I also really enjoyed the fact that Alexis isn't gaga over any of the boys at her school and doesn't make a fool of herself trying to catch a guy's attention... who would've thunk?

And not only is Alexis super chill, so are all the other characters introduced into this book that become close friends with Alexis. This book is definitely tending towards RH because Alexis is the only female in a group of guys who are all fabulous and good looking (according to B.L. Brunnemer at least). I really, really loved how the guys and Alexis interacted because it was so dang funny and interesting and fierce that I couldn't help but get caught up in the amazingness that is this novel!

Not to even mention the really cool aspects of this book like ghosts hanging around town after being killed and all of the craziness that comes with that!

Basically, if you are into contemporary fiction with a wicked twist... this is the book you need to be reading right this second. So put down that novel that a million of other people have read and argued over and have already probably ruined for you, and pick up this gem of a book that may be not as well known but definitely 100x better!

p.s. I heard a new book in the series is releasing January 27th so buy this one quick in preparation for the new release!!! Aghhhh I'm so freakin' excited guys!!!

**p.p.s. check out this post linked here to better understand RH books.**

Hi, I’m Alexis Delaney. I’m your average 17 year old girl. Except I can see the dead. And talk to the dead. And push them away and, well, help them move on. So..okay, I’m not your average 17 year old girl. For years I’ve been struggling to survive the souls still roaming around. The shitheads always seem to find me. Moving from town to town every few months never helped either. More dead just always find me. But things are changing for me now. I’m moving in with my uncle Rory and cousin Tara. I’m finally going to be able to do normal teenage stuff I’ve been missing out on. Right?

Well, if this one bitch of a ghost could leave me alone on campus that would be great. Especially since I haven’t told my new friends about my abilities. Can you believe this? Five good looking guys practically adopt me on my first day of school, and I still think they’re a bit nuts for it. Now if I can only just keep my life with the dead from mixing with my normal life everything would be great. Yeah...I don’t see that happening either. But I’m going to give it a shot. Who knows? It might work.

Being Brooke by Emma Hart (Barley Cross #1)

5 "Being Brooke is Actually Pretty Cool" Stars

I absolutely adore funny books... like you give me a funny book with good content and I love it! And Being Brooke is no different. Basically this chick named Brooke (you may or may not have gotten her name for the title...) has a life that is falling apart. Not only is she working a dead-end job and has more bad dates than the average chica, she's also in love with her best friend... who of course has a girlfriend. So obviously her life was not so bueno...

One thing that I loved about this book is that the awkwardness was balanced with the awesomeness of Brooke. Her life might not have been all together, but dang did she handle herself in those situations that were just a tad too awkward to handle!

I absolutely loved the love story in this novel. There was a twist on the usual friends -> romance story because this is also a story about a woman coming into her own and becoming more confident in herself. Of course there were challenges to this... her mother was a little uptight and she was in love with her best friend. But dang did this girl stay strong and toughen up! This is the best thing about novels like this, because even though the romance is great (and I mean really, really great) but the characters coming into their own and growing up through the novel is just the best thing and leaves me feeling happy and hopeful after finishing the book.

Brooke is a great main character because she isn't perfect and guys aren't tripping over themselves to get with her, therefore she is a real presentation of what women usually are like. Not to say she isn't awesome or pretty or anything like that... but instead she was created to be a real person who didn't get every guy to fall in love with her and that was OKAY!

So yah... to really did "dig" this book because it was just the perfect story to read when I was looking for a romantic comedy. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking to laugh or maybe even blush in embarrassment at some of the situations that go down...

My name is Brooke Barker...

And I'm a freaking disaster.

No, seriously. I’m a college drop-out working a dead-end job, my best friend Carly’s dog gets more action than I do, and I have more bad dates in my diary than there are movie remakes.

Not to mention I'm completely and utterly in love with Cain Elliott.

The problem? He’s in a relationship. With a girl who’s so plastic she makes Barbie cry herself to sleep with jealousy.

The second problem? He's my best friend.

My shut-up-and-put-on-Harry-Potter, yes-this-is-your-shirt, help-I-have-no-power, crap-I’m-out-of-tampons, kinda best friend.

And that’s all he can be, right?

Right.

The Jaguar King by Anna McIlwraith

5 "This is my new favorite series" Stars

Okay I recently announced that I'm into this whole new genre and this book/series is very representative of it! I am absolutely obsessed with this book/series because it has everything. There is action, a kick-ass female lead character, and love interests galore!

So this book is the introduction to this whole other world where shifters rule and are all looking for the ultimate power source... and so enters one human female thrown into the mix. The best thing about this book is the human female because she kicks a** and takes names. You may know this about me because of how often I repeat this in my reviews... but I love a female lead who isn't afraid to stand up for herself and fight for what she believes in.

The thing that I really liked about this book (besides the awesome Emma Chase) was the fact that the author creates such a world that is different than what I expect from a shifter romance. I'm used to the wolves, or lions or some other majestic animal that usually populates the typical shifter romance, but the author goes a step further and presents characters that differ from the norm. At first, I was a little wary of this because there is a reason that wolves and all those other popular shifters dominate. They dominate because they are sexy animals that a lot of people find interesting.

Yet this changes, at lest for me, in this series. OF course there is still the usual shifters that pop up later in the series but I mean seriously, there is a change in what I've come to expect from shifters. First off, these shifters are described as being humongous! Like seriously super big. Remember the Twilight movies where the wolves were super huge and dwarfed normal humans... yah it's kind of like that except the human form of these shifters are also pretty large.

Another change to the usual shifter descriptions is the type of shifters in the series. I wasn't so sure if I liked this at first because the chosen shifter was a little out of my realm of comfort. Like really out of my realm of comfort... I kind of want you to experience the surreal moment of "oh wow, I can't believe this is in the book" for yourself so I'm going to keep this ambiguous and leave the type of shifters in the novel a secret. ;)

But seriously guys, this book is the bomb-dot-com and I really want you all to go out an try this series out! So many things go down in this book it's unreal and I can't wait to read your thoughts and feelings as well as who you think Emma Chase should end up with!

So go out and get your own copy of this book so that you can tell me what you loved/hated (although I really don't think anyone will find something to hate).

p.s. and guess what peeps? this series (of five books so far) is completely free on Kindle Unlimited!!!

Magic is real? Big deal. Bills still gotta be paid.

Especially when you’re heading into vet med. Emma Chase is nothing special – if anything, with a roomie who turns into a jaguar on a regular basis, she’s the sidekick, not the heroine. Her superpowers have more to do with acing her finals and overworking herself. Knowing her best friend’s secret makes it easier to justify her own inclination to keep people at a distance, but it doesn’t change her life.

Until others like him show up on her doorstep, convinced she’s the fated savior of their race, telling her she’s destined to command the magic of – well, Emma doesn’t quite catch that part, she’s too busy getting her ass the hell out of there.

What she does know? The Jaguar King is after her, his rivals want her dead, and she doesn’t have to believe in prophecy to believe they’ll stop at nothing to catch her.

Violence. Magic. Inappropriate humor. Step into a world of wonder and savagery in a gritty urban fantasy with an unlikely heroine, sizzling heroes, and complicated villains. The Jaguar King is a full-length read and the first in a series, and all the books have satisfying resolutions as well as a series-spanning story arc. Definitely no cliff-hangers – just bad-ass shifters with one goal: claim the prize. Claim the Caller of the Blood.

DIY: Mirror, Mirror On The Wall...

Howdy all! I don't know about you, but where I come from, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is kind of an iconic fairy tale and therefore the perfect inspiration for fun DIY inspired crafts! Especially since there are so many book adaptations from the fairy tale ;).

Some of you may not know this, but I love antique shopping and recently I came across this really pretty oval metal frame that looks like it used to have a mirror attached but was recently painted and put for sale. Now this got me thinking on what use I could possibly have for this awesome frame and therefore a great excuse to buy it. Something I've seen on Pinterest are earring holders that use old frames and mesh backgrounds and I knew this would be perfect for my small dorm room!!

So now that you know the back story on this crafty project... here's how to do it:

1. the first step is to gather the supplies

- 1 frame (material of your choice)
- paint (optional)
- some kind of metal mesh background
- metal cutters
- sand paper (optional)
- paper, permanent marker, and tape
- gorilla/metal glue (or staple gun)

2. because my frame was an antique... it required some clean up.

There was a little bit of a residue left on the back of the frame where the mirror used to be and exactly where I planned to glue my metal mesh so I took some sandpaper and a scraper and cleaned it all up. This is a really good idea for any old frame that might be a little dirty because the glue sticks better the clean surfaces that have texture. (or so the package says)

3. after finding the perfect frame, I immediately decided to paint it.

The frame I found at the antique shop had already been painted a salmon color and while I loved the frame, I wasn't so in love with the color. I used a paint sample that I got at Lowe's and a sponge brush to paint over the frame with my new chosen color.

(This step can be skipped if you found a frame that you already like the color of!)

4.  the next step is to find the perfect mesh background to attach to the frame.

I found this really great one at Hobby Lobby and the reason I love it so much is because it has large holes for dangly earrings and small holes for studs. Also the holes are arranged in a great geometric pattern that really complemented my style! They had tons of different options so if you aren't totally in love with the one I chose, I would definitely look at the different options

An alternate to a metal mesh is lace! I've seen tons of examples on Pinterest so if this sounds interesting to you, then I would definitely head over there and check it out.

5. stenciling the frame comes next so grab that paper, permanent marker, and tape!

Okay so cutting the metal mesh free handed is only for those truly gifted and talented and unfortunately, I am not in that selective few. So I got a piece of paper and traced the outside edge of my frame and then used this trace on the metal mesh sheet and traced the shape with a permanent marker.

I would really recommend this step for those of us who are not good at cutting circles (*raises hand*). Also keep in mind just how thick the rim of your frame is, it might be more precise for you to trace the inner edge of your frame and then make sure to keep the scissors off the marked line.

6. using those metal cutters like a pro

So I chose a metal mesh as my earring holder and therefore have to use metal cutters to shape the sheet for the frame. This was a pretty good challenge because my cutters were decidedly straight edged and I was trying to cut an oval... so problems were abound.  But eventually I was able to get the shape I needed for the frame and therefore am almost done with this craft!

note: my frame was once a mirror so it did have a lip that I could have rested the metal mesh against, but I actually found it easier to rest it on top of the lip instead of nestled where the mirror would be.

7. applying the metal mesh to the frame with glue!

So this is one of the final steps... hurray! Make sure that the metal mesh is perfectly matched to the frame by taping the mesh to the frame so that when you flip it over you can get a good look at the whole picture and any mesh hanging out the sides.

Once you are sure that the mesh matches the frame then you are ready to glue this thing together! So the kind of glue I got was gorilla glue epoxy and it worked great! Be kind of careful with this glue because it is pretty strong and no one wants to get their fingers stuck together. I really liked this glue because you could control how much glue came out and direct it where you want it to go. be sparing with this glue because some did leak out the sides and while it actually is easy to clean off once it dries it can be a little annoying.

Once the glue is on the frame and the mesh applied to the glue, you will want to keep a steady pressure onto the mesh and frame while the glue dries... I think mine said it took 5 minutes for the glue to completely dry. After the five minutes I wanted to really secure the mesh to the frame so I added a large compressional object (like a magazine and two oil canisters) on top of the mesh to apply it even firmer to the frame!

8. Viola!

Once you give it like 30 minutes to really compress... you are FINITE!!! Oh my gosh guys this might seem like a little bit of work, but it is so worth the effort because this "magic mirror on the wall" earring holder is absolutely adorable!

p.s. sorry for the low quality pics but I had to use my iPad...

My New Favorite Genre:

Hey guys, it's been a while since I've updated Ineffable Book Blog because school got kind of crazy and then Christmas... but I'm back and want to do a post on this new genre that I've discovered. It's kind of risqué and definitely might be an acquired taste but I've found so many amazing books and series in this genre that I'm super psyched to share it with you guys.

The new genre that has me salivating (sometimes literally) is Reverse Harem books. So hear me out about this... reverse harem is defined as books where the main character has three or more love interests. The most well-known example of this type of book is C.L. Stone's Ghost Bird and Scarab Beetle series. These also happen to be the books that got me into this genre and left me wanting more!!!  Here's my review of the first book in the Ghost Bird series just in case you want a more in-depth look of the book (follow this link).

I'm SO serious when I say that if you have no clue who C.L. Stone is or haven't read her books, you are missing out on some seriously good literature full of swoon-worthy guys! I've also been the type of reader who doesn't always like the triangle love stories that are so popular (e.g. Twilight). I find it so frustrating when a main character flip flops between two guys and drags out the drama on and on only to choose the guy that I definitely wouldn't have chosen because I liked the other guy more and thought she was going to go with him... obviously this is a very touchy subject for me.

But since I found these types of books so frustrating I didn't think the whole reverse harem thing would be any better because there are more guys involved and therefore there must be more drama and frustration. But no, it's like magic where the books are just better and the guys are better and the main characters are better and I'm just so in love with this genre.

I'm so in love with this genre I wanted to share it with all of you out there by giving you a list of Reverse Harem books that I love so that you can check them out for yourself! Let me know what you think and maybe some other genres that you've found that might not be mainstream but have held your attention.

First Book: The Jaguar King
Most Recent: The Raven Thief

Looking for an intro to several different authors? A Reverse Harem Anthology recently released full of novels from top Reverse Harem authors called Falling for Them! I definitely recommend this for anyone who is looking for a sampling of several different authors! The only prerequisite for reading the anthology is Finding Honor by Ripley Proserpina as the second book is published in the anthology.

You can find it here: Falling for Them
