5 "This Series Kills - Literally" Stars
This book... this series...
There are no words for how much I have enjoyed reading Amy Sumida's novels. She is literally a genius when it comes to characters, plots, and romance! This is the first book in the Godhunter series and definitely something that you should check out if you're into strong female roles and lots of adventure and laughs.
So the series starts with Vervain just starting her god hunting career and she kind of explains exactly how she came into this profession. It seems pretty harsh to hunt down the gods, but I think everyone would be a little salty if they almost get sacrificed to a Hawaiian volcano god like some virgin back in the 'ole days. I totally understand why'd she want to protect not only herself but other unsuspecting humans from getting sacrificed. The book then gets really interesting and also chaotic (in the best way of course) when she meets the "God Squad" - a group of mythical and magical beings dedicated to protecting human kind from the other guys who want human death to fuel their powers. This starts Vervain (she's named after a herb btw) on this crazy adventure of hunting, and killing, and basically just getting caught up in the god politics.
The thing that stuck out to me the most in this series is the humor. Yes, books filled with action are great and everybody likes a war scene of two, but without some good for the soul laughter, the warring can get to be a little much. The thing that makes this book a 5 stars to me is the fact that the violence is matched by the humor which is matched by the romance. This trinity balance (hehe pun intended - you'll get this giggle when you read further into the series) takes this book from a four star rating and elevates it above most books that I get through Kindle Unlimited.
But not only is this trinity balance (i'm cracking myself up over this guys) super crucial to the series, but so is the fact that Vervain is just a freakin' awesome character to follow. She's got puns for days and kicks butt wherever she goes, what more do you want to read about???? This character is definitely one of my favorites that I've read this year and probably one of my favorites in this type of genre.
Disclaimer:
Okay just to warn those that are really into the book from what I've mentioned to far, I do want to put a little disclaimer into this review for those who are picky on their romance/series. This series is super long... like 20 books and still growing long... that's a crap load of reading! For me, this is awesome because I never want my series to end! For others, this might just be a little too long for their taste. Also, another little side note, this series does end up categorized as Reverse Harem. Don't know what that is? No problem, check out this post here: My New Favorite Genre to see why I'm currently obsessed with the genre and why you should be too! But if this isn't your style of romance - which is kind of insane because it's super amazing - this might not be the series for you... but I say try it anyways because it's that awesome!
Otherwise, this is a series that EVERYONE should read because it literally has everything you would ever want in a book/series! So go check it out immediately, get yourself a copy, giggle at my inside jokes within this review, and then comment on your favorite character!!!
blurb
I'm going to tell you a secret. The gods are real. All of them. And they want you dead. Yes, you. Don't take it personally, they want all of us dead. Well, maybe not all of us but a lot of us. Why? Because we loved them once.
We used to sacrifice to them. Food, animals, ourselves. Not so much anymore. We stopped believing in them, kicked them to the curb and forgot about them, but they haven't forgotten us. They need us, need the energy we gave them through sacrifice, energy they used to gain magic, power, and immortality. See, the gods aren't gods without us.
So they came up with a plan. War. If we went to war against each other, they could take the dead as sacrifice. So they manipulated us, infiltrated our governments and possessed the minds of our leaders. They played us against each other. It was a good plan and it worked well. Until I found out.
Oh that sounded tough, didn't it? Honestly, I'm nothing special. I don't have super powers or inhuman strength. What I do have is a little magic and enough knowledge to fight them, hunt them. I may even have allies, gods who claim they're on our side, but I'm not sure yet. It's hard to trust a god of thunder who looks so damn good in his leather pants.
