Vain ~ Fisher Amelie

Vain

  • Publisher: Fisher Amelie
  • Publication date: 2/7/2013

If you’re looking for a story about a good, humble girl, who’s been hurt by someone she thought she could trust, only to find out she’s not as vulnerable as she thought she was and discovers an empowering side of herself that falls in love with the guy who helps her find that self, blah, blah, blah...then you’re gonna’ hate my story.

Because mine is not the story you read every time you bend back the cover of the latest trend novel. It’s not the “I can do anything, now that I’ve found you/I’m misunderstood but one day you’ll find me irresistible because of it” tale. Why? Because, if I was being honest with you, I’m a complete witch. There’s nothing redeeming about me. I’m a friend using, drug abusing, sex addict from Los Angeles. I’m every girlfriend’s worst nightmare and every boy’s fantasy.

I’m Sophie Price...And this is the story about how I went from the world’s most envied girl to the girl no one wanted around and why I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.

Review

This is definitely going into my favorite reads shelf on my nook. I absolutely adored the characters and the story line. Fisher Amelie presents a unique twist on what it means to grow up and rehabilitate. This book is one of the best I’ve read that present this concept! And Amelie goes about it in such an interesting and different way, Vain is definitely one of a kind. Almost comparable to Beauty and the Beast, Vain is from the point of view of Sophie Price (AKA “the Beast”). Sophie is usually the antagonist is the usual story. You know, the mean popular girl who uses other people and does her best to break others hearts. Yet when put in a situation where Sophie is forced to think of others for once, well let’s just say the result was surprising.

“No one can know sincere happiness, Sophie, without first having known sorrow. One can never appreciate the enormity and rareness of such a fiery bliss without seeing misery, however unfair that may be.”

I almost didn't read this book because the synopsis of the book is so in your face. From Sophie Price's point of view, she pretty much tells you what a terrible person she is, and I don't know about other people, but I like to read books about characters I like. But I ended up buying the book anyways and I have to say; BEST DECISION EVER! Sophie might come off a little strong at first, but she grows up and her reasons are understandable if not totally valid. I loved how honest and real Fisher Amelie managed to make Vain. It definitely hit on some topics that are only touched in other books. I think we’ve all heard that the reason people are bullies is because of their personal life and Amelie really digs into this by using one of the seven sins; Vanity. I truly did end up liking her by the end of the book. There is a reason this book is so worth the read; it's because the characters change and transition from the worst to the best!

“Fear, Sadness. They're not weaknesses. They are overpowering, defining emotions. They make you human, Sophie.”

Of course I love a little romance in my books and Vain brings it. Yet the romance isn't hard or bitter, instead it's sweet and delicate. Definitely a change from what Sophie primarily focused on before. Ian is such a likable character. I love how he didn't put up with crap from Sophie and challenged her to be better! One of the things that I enjoyed most in this book was the way Ian courted her. (Old-fashioned word, I know, but bear with me.) He wasn’t forthright with his feelings, instead he did little things to show he cared. Also, he wasn’t big on announcing what he had done for her, his actions weren’t done to get a thank you. But instead he did them to make her feel better and make her happy. I don’t know about you, but I would swoon if a guy did all of the things that Ian did for Sophie. Their romance and interactions were the some of the best parts of the book! (especially when Sophie met his parents Winking smile).

“Tell him he was my greatest adventure. Tell him I love him.”

- In a weird twist, I almost feel like Amelie switched the characters. Instead of the usual girl role who doesn't put up with the crap from her male partner, it's the other way around. (props) -

Anyways this book is a big hit for me and I know other readers feel the same. If you are looking for a book to read, this should be your next TBR.

“The truth is, I'm so deep in love with you, I can't see straight. The truth is, I've been afraid to admit it to myself, let alone you. The truth is, I'm terrified.”

Author Info.

authorFisher Amelie resides in the South with her kick ace husband slash soul mate. She earned her first 'mama' patch in 2009. She also lives with her Weim, 'Jonah', and her Beta, 'Whale'. All these living creatures keep the belly of her life full, sometimes to the point of gluttony, but she doesn't mind all that much because life isn't worth living if it isn't entertaining, right?

Fisher grew up writing. She secretly hid notebooks and notebooks of dribble in a large Tupperware storage container in her closet as a kid. She didn't put two and two together until after college where it suddenly dawned on her, "Hey, I like writing". She's a bit dense. "No, I'm not." "Yes, you are. Put down that Oreo, your butt can't take any more." "You're rude." "Yeah, yeah." Anyway, she likes to write and has finally beaten her self-esteem into submission enough to allow herself to be scrutinized under the 'other readers' microscope. "No! No! Not a cover slip! Last time it gave me a ra...." (mumbling)
