Damselflycover3_thumb1

In 2065, the Lilliput Project created Lina - the first six-inch-tall winged girl - as the solution to a worldwide energy and food crisis.

Isolated in a compound amidst the forests of Denmark, Lina has grown up aware of only one purpose: learn how to survive in a world filled with hawks, bumblebees, and loneliness. However, on the eve of her sixteenth birthday, she discovers that she’s not the only teenager her size. Six 'Toms' were created shortly after Lina, and now her creators need to prove to the world that tiny people are the next logical step in human evolution. In other words, they need to prove that reproduction is possible.
Um. No thanks. Lina's already fallen in love with a boy she met online named Jack. Only he has no idea that thumbelina1847 could literally fit inside his heart.

When her creators threaten to hurt Jack unless she chooses a husband from among the ‘Toms’, Lina agrees to star in a reality TV series. Once the episodes begin to air, the secret of her size is out. Cut off from any contact with the outside world, Lina assumes Jack is no longer interested. After all, what guy would want to date a girl he can’t even kiss?

Slowly, very slowly, she befriends the six young men who see her as their only ticket to happiness. Perhaps she can make just one guy’s dream of love and companionship come true. But her creators have a few more twists in store for her that she never thought possible.

She’s not the only one playing to the cameras.

Review

The Plot. I really fell in love with the idea that surrounded this book. It centers around the life of a “Thumbelina” or Lina, who is a six-inch-tall winged girl who grew up in a lab. The author did a great job of setting the scene for this book and making it into something interesting and believable.

The way the book was told though Lina’s eyes was unbelievably well written. All the emotions and the events of the book were told through the perspective of a girl who seemed so normal but had an abnormal life. I felt like I was reading an autobiography written by Lina, this was how real the author made the story. Yet, not only did the author manage to make the book life-like, she also managed to create a unique story that followed an unusual pattern. This book was a mixture of the Bachelorette and the Maximum Ride series by James Patterson. An interesting mixture that made for a good read.

Lina, Jack, & the “Toms”. I thought that Lina was a great character, if a little misguided. She was refreshingly naïve about the real world and a person’s true character. This lead to many mishaps and heartbreaks in the book, but told a great story. I loved how she was strong and brave, yet sweet enough to save the people that she thought had her back.

Jack was an interesting character as the reader was able to see him through the eyes of Lina. To Lina he was the love of her life, if an impossible one. I thought that his dedication to her was amazing for they had never met. I really liked how the author wrote his reactions because it added drama and emotion to the book.

The “Toms” were great because they knew a lot more than Lina about their situation. They kept it interesting with their secrets and their different personalities. I would love to see a book about some of the “Toms” that really stood out in this book.

Other Characters. What made the book really interesting was the way other characters interacted with Lina and how they affected her life, opinions, and her view on her situation. Many of Lina’s friends turned out to be enemies and the twists in the book that totally changed my opinion of what was going to happen.

The End. The best part of this book was definitely the ending because of how everything was almost brought to a close and then the author threw a twist into the plot. I loved the big reveals at the end of the book, they really made this book into a four star book and I loved them. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series and hope it comes out soon.

About the Author

jennie-bates_thumb1I'm a visual effects artist for film and television by day, and at night I don my author cape and pen stories for the YA crowd. I love a good fairy tale, especially if there's a creepy twist, so that's what I write.
I met my husband in the World of Warcraft and we live in Los Angeles with our cat. We spend our time playing video games, reading, hiking, sweeping up cat hair, and cursing the terrible traffic. I have a bachelor's degree in Religion and Philosophy from Hillsdale College, and some of my past jobs have included: swimming lessons teacher, lifeguard, furniture salesperson, barista, and loan officer. I was especially terrible at the loan officer bit and that's what prompted me to make a major change and go off to Canada to get a diploma in 3D Animation and Visual Effects. After that, I moved to Los Angeles by myself and roomed with two crazy sisters I found on Craigslist. But that's another tale.
