Just Friends by Monica Murphy

4 Confused Yet Amazed Stars

I couldn't decide how to rate this book because even though there was so much to this book that I didn't really like, I could definitely appreciate how enraptured I was by the story and the writing in itself. I wasn't a fan of the characters because I never knew what to expect and I definitely didn't like how the book ended, yet I found myself reading this book in almost one sitting with very little breaks and just completely focused on the novel. That's the amazing thing, I couldn't tear my eyes away from the pages even as I cringed about the situations the main character ended up in. Why was this book so addicting???

This book falls somewhere between young adult and new adult in terms of character maturity and the level of graphic content. This was definitely one of the more confusing parts of this novel for me because I was bombarded by the constant immatureness of the characters and then followed by a graphic sex scene... like what the H?

There is a lot of major drama in this book that I probably should have expected and yet kind of hoped would be left out. The main character is very finicky and just could not make a decision in regard to what boy she actually wanted. This novel was peppered with indecisiveness and floundering which is not something I'm usually interested in reading. I don't mind hesitation, don't get me wrong I understand the situation, but I don't like it when characters are strung along and there is really no actual choice being made throughout the book. And yet I can see where this character struggled because even I had a hard time finding the "good" guy in the mess of characters and situations.

This doesn't even include the love-interest options. You have the childhood best friend vs. the new popular guy at school. Okay this is a simple enough love triangle... I can deal. But wait! There is a whole new factor thrown in that just blew my mind and literally had me clenching my teeth in anger throughout the novel.

THE BAD BFF

Yah not only are we dealing with a love triangle, but also a terrible BFF who messes around with BOTH of the love interests in this book! Like this enters a whole new realm of crazy where it seems every love story characteristic is thrown in to really add some umph to an already dramatic novel.

And yet even as I cringed through every chapter, I still could not put this book down! Major props to the author for creating this train wreck and yet making it so catastrophic and just plain crazy that I couldn't rip my eyes away from it for two seconds. And not a train wreck in a bad way either, instead this book is crafted to always keep the reader guessing as the unexpected happens.

So even though this book definitely is not something that usually catches my attention, it does a tremendous job of holding you down and keeping the reader always guessing until the very end. (the ending to this novel is a whole other story btw).

Even though this book confused me and ripped me apart emotionally, I am still interested in reading the next book and would actually recommend this novel to any YA lover. Apparently the next book is about another character in the novel and I'm interested in seeing how that goes since this book was so crazy...

blurb

It’s the end of summer. Just before I start senior year with my two best friends in the whole world. Dustin and Emily are everything to me. We’ve been inseparable since middle school, and when we’re together, nothing can go wrong.

But things aren’t always what they seem. Em’s turned into a drunken mess who parties too much. Dustin and I have hooked up a few times—and now he’s ready to take our relationship to the next level. Yet I’m not sure I want things to change. I’m scared if I take it any further with Dustin, our friendship will be ruined forever. Then there’s Ryan. The new guy. He’s hot. He flirts way too much. And Em has totally set her sights on him.

So when my best friend betrays me in the worst possible way, guess who’s there to help me pick up the pieces of my broken heart? Ryan. But he’s so confusing. Annoying. Sweet. Sexy. I want to trust him, yet he makes it so hard. What I really want is for everything to go back to the way it was before.

Before I found out that best friends make the worst kind of enemies.
